LIKES:
languages, socializing, Spock, Kirk (he drives her crazy but he's a good friend), reading, music, dancing, space travel
DISLIKES:
Kirk (because he's frustrating), when she can't tell if Spock cares, being left alone for too long, nosy people, busy work, not being productive, not being challenged for long periods of time, when she isn't sure what's going on

her friends-she would do anything for them

is a little argumentative at times
GOALS: at least 2
Nyota doesn't have a whole lot left in her life to work for. She would like to be recognized for her talent with languages on a larger level, and she would like to get Spock to show that he cares a little more. She would also like to have a family some day, way into the future. Before that, she has a lot of climbing the ranks and exploring to do.
OVERALL: Nyota is a very dedicated person. She loves her job as the Chief Communications Officer aboard the USS Enterprise and enjoys working with her friends (though some of them driver her crazy sometimes). She was dedicated to her studies and was the top student in Xenolinguistics. She is fluent in several languages and is a valuable member to the Enterprise crew. She is also a very caring person and sometimes gets upset when her current boyfriend refuses to show any emotion, or at least think about what the things he does can do to her. She is a brave young woman who has rescued her parents as a child and taken a few risks aboard the Enterprise as well. She can be a little stubborn and argumentative, but she is a genuinely good person.

OVERALL HISTORY:
Nyota was born in Africa, where she grew up the oldest of three children to Kamau and Makena Uhura. She and her parents often visited her uncle, Raheem, who did not live on Earth. During one visit their shuttle was damaged during an explosion while her uncle was trying to fix a problem with the ship. Her parents had gone unconscious and her uncle got knocked off and began getting pulled into the planet's atmosphere. Even though he was going to die, he was able to tell Nyota how to get her parents into the escape pod and talked her through the entire thing before telling her that he was proud of her. Her uncle Raheem became one of her role models after that moment, and was one of the people who she credits for her desire to join Starfleet. The only two people she has told so far of the incident are her parents, and she plans on keeping it that way.
Before attending Starfleet Academy, Nyota Uhura went to school at Nairobi Girls Academy and took an advanced class on the Earth-Romulus War. She found her love for languages while studying there and also played racquetball at a competitive level. After that she went to the Institute for Advanced Mathematics and applied to Starfleet in 2255. The night before she left for Starfleet Academy she met James Kirk. She refused to tell him her first name, but flirted with him a little until he was beat up (and grabbed her breasts in the process) buy other potential Starfleet cadets.
At Starfleet she focused her studies on Xenolinguistics. She became a favorite students for many of the professors, including Commander Spock. She shared a dorm room with an Orion student named Gaila and became friends with her. She did very well in school and became fluent in several languages. She began a relationship with Commander Spock, but kept it more or less a secret because he was one of her teachers. She was asked to play the role of Communications Officer by Jim when he attempted the Kobayashi Maru test (programmed by Spock) and she accepted, though she had a hard time keeping the sarcasm out of her voice during the simulation. She was disappointed when she found out that he had cheated, but didn't have a lot of time to dwell on the fact because the cadets were assigned their first real mission.
At first, Uhura was assigned to the USS Farragut, but she confronted Spock about the situation and convinced him to assign her to the USS Enterprise, the ship she had requested. It was definitely a good thing because she ended up playing a major role on the ship. When the current Communications Officer could not speak Romulan, Uhura was commanded by Captain Pike to take over. Though she picked up no transmission, Commander Spock had said she was “unmatched” in Xenolinguistics, and she kept her spot on the Bridge. They discovered that their mission was going to change when the war criminal, Nero, hailed their vessel. Captain Pike went aboard his ship and their new mission was to get their captain back and save Earth from the same fate that Vulcan received, destruction. She did her best to comfort Spock (who seemed to need no comfort initially) and do her job. The mission was successful and her now friend Jim Kirk became captain of the Enterprise.
After a year the incident Nyota was still serving on the Enterprise when the crew was trying to save a pre-warp alien species from extinction via volcano. The plan was to put a cooling device inside the volcano and her still boyfriend Commander Spock would place it there to be detonated. The mission was not going well and Spock insisted that he sacrifice himself for the cause because the ship could not be seen by the natives. Nyota was very angry with Spock for this decision because she felt like it meant that he did not care how she would feel if he died. He was rescued by the Enterprise when Captain Kirk decided to take the ship out of the ocean and to the volcano anyway. Though Spock said he was grateful, he also noted that it violated several Starfleet protocols. Lieutenant Uhura was still angry with them when the crew was assigned a mission to capture a terrorist, John Harrison. She said as much to Jim, even though she didn't want to talk about it. Their original mission to kill Harrison was changed when Jim made the more Starfleet appropriate decision to capture him. She went with Captain Kirk and Commander Spock in a shuttle to Qo'nos where she got into an argument with Spock and put Jim in the middle of it. The issue was resolved but the Klingons attacked and Nyota convinced her captain to let her try to speak to the Klingons before they fought. Though the Klingons would not listen, the three of them still technically captured Harrison, though he surrendered and went willingly to the Enterprise. They learned that he was not, in fact, John Harrison, but a man named Khan, who was three hundred years old. His people were frozen in cryotubes. He tried to convince the crew that he was on their side, and it seemed like he might be telling the truth, but he killed a Stafleet captain (who was, admittedly, going to kill the Enterprise crew) and betrayed Captain Kirk and his crew.
The Enterprise was damaged. Jim Kirk went to reactivate the warp car and got radiation poisoning. Nyota was visibly upset and cried with Spock. She encouraged her boyfriend to go get Kahn and avenge their captain, but when she found out that they needed Khan to save Kirk, she had the engineering team beam her down to the earth so she could stop Spock from killing their enemy. Kirk recovered and a year later Uhura was reassigned to the USS Enterprise for their five year exploratory mission.
