Their five year mission had only just begun. Lieutenant Uhura had been keeping close tabs on their communications, but so far they hadn't encountered anything out of the ordinary. That wasn't really surprising though, seeing as they hadn't been gone very long. Just over a day. Quite literally. It was the morning, 0500, and Nyota was lying in bed trying to remember what she needed to do today. She had already checked off getting the initial exam in the Medical Bay yesterday. Crew members were supposed to report for the physical before any mission, especially one that would last this long. Nyota had decided to get it done and over with right away, so she didn't have that to worry about anymore. She was due on the Bridge today at 0900, so she had a few hours before her shift started.
Uhura calculate the time that she had before she needed to be on the Bridge and started to plan out her day. First thing was first. She got out of bed and brushed her teeth, then pulled on a pair of sweatpants and a tank top and began a run around the halls. She had played sports when she was in school and she wanted to keep in shape in case she had to go on an away mission. Besides, it was just a good idea to stay healthy in space. She got a few looks but no one seemed to mind too much that she was running around. She wondered if she would be able to keep this sort of activity up on their mission. She was sure that since the ship had been given a mission that it had been fitted with a weight room, but there was nothing like a good run.
About an hour later, at 0600 Nyota got showered and dressed in her uniform. She put her hair in a high ponytail and began walking to Ten Forward for something to eat. She still had a few hours to kill before her shift, and despite the early hour, she was sure that there would be a few crew members at the very least there to talk to. The ship didn't just run itself. As she expected, when she walked in there were a few people there. She got some cereal and took a seat.
ooc: not the best starter post, but it's something (:

The excitement of being on the mission was exhilarating, imagine not only being on a Starship but also on a five year mission. For recent inductee ensign Williams the delight had yet to wear off. Her mind raced with wild ideas and concepts of the different species that they might encounter on their mission, hopefully she would have time to document, study, catalogue and name everything that the Enterprise encountered. An ambitious, personal challenge that. It had been a little intimidating at the first, wandering round the vessel when the rest of the crew seemed to know everyone else, so new faces stuck out.
Not that she minded, Cassandra enjoyed meeting new people and making friends, especially if she was going to have to live with them for five years. Her friends, where so jealous when Cassandra told them of her posting. The day had started early for Cassandra, unable to sleep, her bed uncomfortable and not willing to disturb her cabin mate, she had gone to get an early breakfast. Getting lost along the way at first hindered the goal, but a quick stop to ask for directions and well, her she was.
There where a surprising amount of people up at this hour, though the ship would need crewing around the clock so it really should not have been much of a surprise. Smiling she collected a bowl of cereal and some sort of juice, Cassandra wasn't sure what type it was before looking for somewhere to sit. Spotting one of the bridge crew members sitting by herself she made her way over confidently. "Hey mind if I join you?" She inquired with a friendly smile, hoping that she would not make a comment on how short she was. Cassandra still found it difficult to get over how friendly everyone had been, or if not friendly then welcoming. It was great, she felt like part of the team.
Cassandra wondered what the day would have in store, much of yesterday had been introductions and meeting knew people, settling in her shared cabin. Not that she minded sharing, it would be weird being in a room by herself. One thing she did dislike was the lack of animals, being a Zoologist who possessed a deep interest in animals. An environment that lacked them was to her weird, that would take some getting used to.

Scotty was excited about his posting on the Enterprise. He hadn't got much sleep the night before due to his hanging around in Engineering. He had also taken a some what tour of the beautiful vessel but kept finding himself returning to the engine room. After another couple of hours there, the Gamma shift leader finally but politely kicked him out.
"Sir. We've got this." Scotty remembered the young Lieutenant saying.
"Aye, lad. You're right. I'll give ye some room to do yer jobs." he had replied.
Walking the corridors now, because he didn't want to go to his quarters, he found himself near Ten forward.
"Maybe a quick bite." he muttered to himself as he the doors split upon his arrival and he entered.
There were a few other folks there and he realized that most of them were his third favorite past time right behind engines and a good scotch.
"Well hello there lasses." he said as he walked up to a table with two of the most beautiful women he had seen today.

Early morning always began with the timed meditation, which was key for clearing her mind and focusing on the tasks she had set for her today. Following meditation was a slow step-by-step walk through some of the more complicated movements of Vulcan martial arts, and then a shower to wash off any sweat she might have generated in doing so. Afterwards, she prepared herself for the day ahead, putting on customary uniform and pampering herself slightly before moving on from her private quarters to breakfast.
T'Laina's dark eyes narrowed as she entered Ten Forward quietly, hands folded primly behind her back as she walked in and over to pick up a vegetarian breakfast, particularly consisting of a human fruit she enjoyed very much: the grapefruit. Her hair was pulled tightly into a bun at the base of her skull, from her styling this morning, revealing those pointed ears, accented by small emerald studs: a gift from Kuvak she cherished deeply. She took up a bowl, the grapefruit, a knife, and a spoon, and looked for a place to sit among the crowd. None of her regular colleagues were among the assorted ensigns and lieutenants, so she settled on a table with a population consisting of more of the fairer sort and seemingly well balanced. No loud noises or annoying voices here.
"Forgive me, but I require a place to sit. I will not bother you long, only to finish my breakfast." she stated calmly, her dark eyes blinking briefly before she settled down beside them without further ado. She methodically dug into her grapefruit once she had cut it into two precise equal halves and began to scoop out parts of it with her spoon and eat. Her gaze only met the humans when she was in the process of chewing, and she only cut her gaze to spoon another piece.

The Lieutenant wasn't by herself for very long. Soon more people were entering Ten Forward and she had some company. The first was an Ensign that Nyota recognized only a little. She felt a little bad about that, mostly because her current friend group consisted of Kirk, Scotty, and Bones, but that didn't mean that she didn't welcome more friends. She'd just been with those three for so long. And Spock of course, but she figured that since she was dating him he didn't exactly count as a friend. Did Vulcans have friends? She generally considered herself open minded, and since Spock said that he considered Kirk a friend, she supposed the whole thing was possible. Sometimes dating a Vulcan was entirely too confusing, but that thought was just completely off topic for the moment. Lieutenant Uhura refocused and nodded at the Ensign who wanted to join her.
“I don't mind at all. I'm not really expecting anyone so the seats are open.” She smiled and then looked back to her cereal and put a spoonful into her mouth. Cereal was always a good breakfast food to fall back on, in Nyota's opinion. It was simple and didn't require any cooking, or too many ingredients. Just a bowl, a spoon, some milk, and the person's choice of wheat and ta-da, there was breakfast. “Are you finding everything on the ship alright?” It was the best question she could think of at the moment. She wasn't sure if it was the Ensign's first mission on the ship or not, she'd been a little too focused on their last missions to notice many people. That was probably not a good thing.
Lieutenant Commander Scott was the next to join them. She gave him a smile as he approached. “Good morning, Scotty. I was beginning to think you'd spend the entire mission in Engineering.” From what Uhura had heard, Scotty was a little more than dedicated to the Engineering room. Of course, a lot of it was just rumor, but she also knew that Scotty was one of the main reasons that the Enterprise was still space worthy.
Nyota blinked a few times at the remarks the other Lieutenant made as she joined them. Uhura would have thought that she would have been used to the customary Vulcan way of speaking by now, but she found that it still threw her off t times. “You're not a bother at all,” she said. She was used to dealing with Spock sounding as though he was just narrating his life, but sometimes she forgot that it was a trait that most of the race shared.

"Well. Ye know how I am about me engines." Scotty said with a smile in reply to Uhuras' teasing. "Someone needs to make sure they're up and running right."
He turned to the young Ensign seated with them and offered his hand.
"Hello, Ensign. Montgomery Scott. Chief Engineer." he said. "I don't believe I've had the pleasure of meeting ya yet."
A few moments went by when a young Lieutenant in Science blue joined them. He smiled as he looked around the table.
"This place is almost as heavenly as me engine room." he joked with a grin. He turned to Uhura and offered a big smile. "I've said it before and I'll say it again." he started. "I like this ship." And with that, he took a big bite from his sandwich.

Cassandra smiled widened when Uhura said she could join her. "Thanks" She replied as she placed her drink and cereal down on the table before taking a seat. More members of the crew turned up, it surprised Cassie as she did not think that as many members of the crew would be up at this hour. "Yeah this is amazing my friends back at the academy could not believe where I got posted" Cassandra burst out her voice filled with delight. "I couldn't either" She admitted grinning like ear to ear.
Cassandra turned when the chief engineer arrived and shook his offered hand as he introduced himself. "Cassandra Williams, Zoologist call me Cassie, Cass I really don't mind I respond to both my nicknames" She informed him. "Where the engines running okay?" She inquired seemingly concerned or troubled by the fact that they had come up in the conversation.
When another member of the science team arrived Cassandra was about to strike up a conversation but stopped herself. She did not seem like the type of person who was interested at the moment in a conversation. Perhaps such a thing would be possibly when they where working together.

Sleep for Kirk was impossible. He was still reeling a bit from dealing with Kahn and dying, and then being not-dead. Bones had tossed a few undead jokes his way, which Kirk laughed off, but when the night came everything always rushed up at him like an unforgiving sea intent on drowning him. Avoiding the chaos that was trying to get himself to fall asleep, Kirk elected to stay vigilant and keep a watchful eye over their travels. A Captain was always responsible for his ship anyway, Kirk was simply staying on top of things - was how he intended to rationalize if anyone were to find him out. Jim's eyes had grown weary as the hours dragged by, he was sure it was well past sleeping hours now, and that was the only thing that could have spurred him to rise from his seat and seek a method of stretching his limbs.
The Captain of Enterprise decided that he would take himself a leisurely stroll away from the Bridge and possibly even grab himself a drink or some food to energize himself. He checked his watch while his other arm was dragged across his strained eyes. This wasn't anything new for him, in fact by this point it was Kirk's routine. He would stay up for hours and hours navigating, then slip off in the early hours to get a meal before much of the rest of the crew awoke (which was difficult timing considering the shifts were set so that a crew was always in performance on the ship) and from there he would return to Captain duties. If there was no mission to explore, then later in the day he would wander off and find a closet to doze off in when the building pressure of sleep became too much to bear.
Kirk strutted with purpose, an easy-going sort of step that was also equal parts commanding as he headed for the ship's eatery. The pit of his belly rumbled with anticipation of being fed, to which Kirk replied with a pat on his own stomach. He approached Ten Forward and the doors divided, revealing a stable of Enterprise crew on the other side. For a moment Kirk stood frozen, apparently he had misjudged the sleeping habits of everyone else. The brief clip of hesitation was washed away immediately by a flash of the Captain's pleasing smile. He tossed a generalized nod toward the room and moved briskly for the assembly of food. He knew he had to mix with his crew, and honestly he would have liked to, talking and garnering attention was practically what the young captain was known for, but the mixture of fatigue and hunger was not to be put off for much longer. He grabbed a tray quickly, and loaded it impressively with muffins, fruit, sausage, bowls of different cereal, and pretty much whatever else was familiarly edible to him. Once please with his selection, and with an apple gripped by his teeth, Kirk made a diverted beeline for the table where he'd spotted Nyota and Scotty.
The beach of a seat smacked Kirk's rear as he plopped down, his tray crashing onto the table before him. It was only once Kirk had been seated that he noticed the others seated with his friends. Right, he still needed to be properly introduced to a large portion of his crew. Jim grabbed the red apple from his mouth with his right hand, effectively taking a chunk out of it as he did so. He then offered his left hand to the ensign. "Captain James T. Kirk." He spoke with a mouthful of apple. The other woman, noticeably a Vulcan, received a much more modest wave and lift of the eyebrows. Dealing with a half-Vulcan like Spock could only make Kirk assume what a full Vulcan woman would be like. He didn't worry about it too long though, as he had the important matter of wolfing down breakfast to tend to. Uhura and Scotty went without a direct greeting, the three of them had been through enough together to not take it personal.

Cassandra eyes widened as Captain James T. Kirk, The Captain James T. Kirk sat before her on the other side of the table. She had never expected to meet him in person. "Ensign Cassandra Williams" She said hastily. "It is an honour to meet you Sir I look forward to serving with you" It was a true honour for her, Captain Kirk was a hero. Her friends from the Academy where jealous of her posting to the Enterprise, they would be green with envy after finding out that she had actually met Captain Kirk. She took a sip of her drink before eating some of her breakfast, Cassandra felt a little bit nervous with the Captain so close. Cassandra needed to keep herself calm and settled, still who would not be sightly excited when the Captain of the ship was sitting on the other side of the table. She never had expected to meet him, at least not on a face to face sort of basis.
A few days ago Cassandra Williams had been an Academy cadet, sitting with her friends worrying about the last few exams and the results required to get through them. The bulk of that time, she actually spent studying, still working towards getting through them all... And now here she was, on one of the most advanced starships in Starfleet. It still brought her great pride, the excitement and the adventure refused to wear off on her. Her thoughts for the moment hadn't been of her home or how much she would miss it. The new environment, her role, the overall mission and all of the new faces kept her distracted from that notion, though it was an inevitable fact that Cassandra would find herself missing home, as well as the animals. She spent the majority of her time on Earth with the company of an animal. Admittedly this preference for animal company became difficult to stick to, especially when she encountered more of her conspecifics and the massive variety of alien races that made up Starfleet. Being in an environment bare of animals both wild and domestic was a relatively new concept for her, one that would give the new Zoologist great difficulty in adjusting to.
