OVERALL:
The thing about Spock's personality is...it doesn't really exist. He is not expressive and it takes a lot to get him to display any sort of emotion. Though he appears robotic, he does have things he finds enjoyable and other things he finds revolting. His decisions are based on logic and perception, and he will not do something without first giving it thought. The human-vulcan hybrid is a genius-- his mind always in extensive use. He feels most comfortable in an environment that he can control, and is adamant to assume authority over Kirk. Though the two often butt heads, Spock and Kirk are pretty much a packaged deal and Kirk manages to get the human out of Spock.

OVERALL HISTORY:
Growing up a hybrid kind of sucked. Spock didn't belong with humans and he didn't belong with vulcans and it was just really frustrating for a while. Though he's got enough of the vulcan 'no emotions' thing going for him to seem strange to humans, he also had a harder time suppressing the emotions. This became one of his first incidents when he succumbed to insults from classmates and had a violent outburst. The particular outburst, as well as having to put up with classmates on several accounts beforehand, brought to Spock much embarassment and aggravation. He even went as far as to ask his father why he'd married a human to begin with.
Being half human continued to come up in negative light. Spock aspired to succeed in training and applied to a couple schools. Though he did well, he was judged and less was expected from him due to his makeup. When he was told that he'd done well "despite his disadvantage of being half human", he no longer had interest in that particular school.
Despite the rocky start, Spock finally started getting somewhere. He attended the second school he'd applied for and climbed the ranks with charisma and skill. He eventually became a commander with Starfleet Academy, and later taught there. From there, he only became more skillful, eventually creating devices that would help with training as well as helping to prepare cadets for missions. It became his job to create various simulation devices and he was more than good at it.
Meeting Kirk was basically the first occurrence in a while that caused Spock incredibly aggravation. It was speculated that Kirk cheated during a simulation, and ironically enough, this brought the two together. Spock first met Kirk at a hearing, though they (understandably) did not get along very well initially.
Kirk went on to be the bane of Spock's existence after his mother was killed. Kirk stepped over the line in order to evoke an emotional response out of the half vulcan, resulting in Spock nearly killing him. Spock stepped down from his position, only to return to it soon after because he was needed.
Spock later met his counterpart on Earth who wanted he and Kirk to become friends. Somehow, between that period of hatred for the guy and where they are now, they did.
